PROVO — Teachers and administrators at Provo City Schools are excited about the possibilities the recently announced "Google Fiber" could bring to their students. Schools will be among the first organizations to obtain access to the superfast giga-bit network.
Many educators have said that with the new network, the learning styles and techniques will increase, not only for the students, but for educators as well.
"Think about Google," said technology integration teacher Kim Broadbent. "Google! I just think that to partner with a company like this, with such an amazing reputation, is beyond words exciting."
Provo School District Administrators said a few of the obvious benefits will be access to faster internet as well as more online tools, including distance learning.
"We're going to be able to work with them in a capacity that we never thought was possible before," said technology director Chad Duncan.
However, Provo teachers have also discussed the long-term benefits of using Google Fiber to increase the technology in Utah.
"I think there are things that we're going to be able to do with technology that haven't even been thought of yet," Broadbent said.
Broadbent also said Google Fiber will continue to further a pilot program recently developed by Provo schools that includes allowing students to take devices home to use for school projects.
While the Google Fiber announcement is big news for the city of Provo, Google will also receive a $50 million network with the contract.
