SANDY — The Superintendent of the Canyons School District announced his resignation at a district board meeting Tuesday night.

David Doty has been the superintendent since 2008 when the district was created and split from the Jordan School District. His resignation takes effect at the end of June.

He will leaving to lead the Utah-based education reform company, Education Direction, and will be spearheading efforts to improve student outcome in public school districts and colleges.

He said his decision was in part because of wanting to spend more time with his family, but he will leave the school district after seeing plenty of success and controversy as he worked to change the educational focus of his students during his tenure.

In 2012, employees and parents called for an investigation into the district's administration, claiming it had created an environment of intimidation. However, the school board defended and supported Doty throughout the controversy.

"We believed he was the right person to lead this District when we hired him four years ago," the board wrote in a statement. "And we are even more convinced now that he is the right person to lead Canyons School District."

Shortly after that, the school board approved a raise and bonus for Doty. Under his watch, the Canyons School District sought a $250 million bond to fix old schools and build new schools while other districts cut back.

Doty hopes to make a smooth transaction to the new company but plans to continue his work in changing and bettering the education system.

"The success we have experienced in the Canyons School District will be heavily utilized in helping schools around the country significantly and measurably improve the relevance and depth of what students know and are able to do," he said in a news release.
