Hannah Howell notches perfect game

Senior pitcher Hannah Howell was historically dominant Saturday against Loyola-Marymount, retiring every batter she faced. She had three strikeouts in five innings, and her teammates provided the run support, scoring 11 runs in game two of a doubleheader.

BYU lost both games Friday, managing only three hits in both games. The bats came alive Saturday, with the Cougars collecting 26 hits in the two games.

BYU has a 19-22 record on the season now, with a 8-4 conference record. The team goes on the road for their next series, against the Broncos of Santa Clara.

BYU junior Chase Dalton took first-place in the decathlon Friday at the Sacramento State Mondo Mid-Major Invitational.

"It's great that Dalton finished first, but we didn't perform quite as well as we'd hoped," head coach Mark Robison said. "Especially after starting out so well yesterday and even in the first event today. We'll do another decathlon in a couple weeks, though, and hopefully we'll be able to get these guys qualified for regionals."

The track and field athletes compete in the Utah State Invitational in Logan this weekend.

The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation announced its 2013 swimming and diving All-Academic selections, and 27 members of the BYU swim and dive team qualified for the award.

"I think we have outstanding student-athletes in our program," head swimming coach John Brooks said. "Brigham Young is a tough school academically and it is difficult to excel both in the pool and in the classroom. I am really proud of all the swimmers who made the MPSF All-Academic Team."

BYU provided a list of athletes, which included 14 men and 13 women, who qualified for the award.

BYU athletics celebrated another year of success on the field and in the classroom with the 10th annual Y awards last week.

The awards were hosted by KSL radio talent Greg Wrubell. You did well, Greg.

Congratulations to all the student-athletes for their efforts during the previous year.
