SOUTH SALT LAKE — A Salt Lake man is in extremely critical condition after being accidentally run over by his own work truck.

Just before 1 p.m., the 54-year-old man was working on his service truck in the parking lot of the Roper train yards at 2765 South Orlando Place in South Salt Lake. He had the engine running and the hood up while working on the nearly 3-ton truck, according to Sgt. Gary Keller.

Somehow the truck slipped into gear and knocked the man over. The front wheels of the truck apparently ran over the man's stomach, causing critical injuries, Keller said.

He was transported to a local hospital where he is near death as a result of the accident, Keller said.

Keller said the vehicle that ran over the man is a large service vehicle designed for working on semi-trucks. It is extremely heavy and usually has a compressor and a welder on board. It is owned by a private contractor and not Union Pacific Railroad.

The incident is under investigation by the South Salt Lake Major Accident Unit. More details will be posted as they become available.
