(KSL News) The Salt Lake Valley Health Department is pledging its support for a possible smoking ban in Salt Lake County.
Department board members voted today on a resolution supporting a possible ordinance that would ban smoking in county-owned recreational facilities and public gathering areas.
The board discussed the possibility of passing the regulation but decided against it because a violation would be a class B misdemeanor and could carry with it a jail sentence.
Board member Cheryl D. Cook explained, "We felt this would be inappropriate, and that the smoking issue would be best dealt with by the county council, which sets the infractions and have it more a peer pressure issue than a health department issue."
The board passed a resolution urging the county council to pass a similar ordinance that would carry a lesser punishment.
