(NBC News) -- A new study shows children are no safer in SUV’s than in cars.

Researchers say that's largely because of the doubled risk of rollovers in SUV’s, which cancels out the safety advantages of their greater size and weight.

The study examined a sample from more than 72-thousand children aged 15 or younger who were involved in crashes.

The highest odds of injury occurred among those children riding without a seatbelt in an SUV that rolled over.

The study appears in today's issue of the journal 'Pediatrics.'

It was sponsored by partners for Child Passenger Safety and State Farm Insurance.
