(AP) - APOCALYPSE PREP: The supposed end of the ancient Mayan calendar has led some to believe it will usher in the end of the world. But whether one aims to survive doomsday or ride out the aftermath of an economic meltdown or superstorm, experts say being financially ready is the first step to being prepared.

NO DEBT: Survival requires money to buy food and other supplies. And building your own underground shelter isn't cheap. Eliminate credit card debt and set aside money for disaster prep.

CASH MONEY: Don't count on ATMs working in a disaster. Stash some cash at home.
