The postseason for 2A and 3A boys basketball begins this weekend.
Jockeying for region titles and state tournament seedings continues with the 1A, 4A and 5A boys.
The state tournament begins this weekend for the 2A and 3A boys and girls and the 1A, 4A and 5A girls. The 1A Girls state championship is Saturday at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.
Team and individual state titles will be on the line as the best wrestlers in the state gather in Orem for the State Wrestling tourney. Layton at Syracuse, 7 p.m. Friday
These two teams are tied for 4th in Region 1 with only two games remaing and only four teams in Region 1 will get a berth in the state tournament. Expect an intense battle Friday night. 3A Boys State Tournament: Dixie at Judge Fri. 7pm
Judge is a state championship contender but they will be tested in the first round by a very good Dixie team. 3A Boys State Tournament: Bear River at Payson Fri. 7pm
This may be the most evenly matched first round matchup in the tournament 2A Boys State Tournament: No. 5 Richfield vs. No. 4 Gunnison Sat. 1:30 pm (@ Orem High School)
It's not often two ranked teams meet in the first round of a state tournament but that will be the case Saturday.
Goodman scored 38 the Cougars 60 points in a 9 point win over WestTy Nielsen, Sky View
Nielsen came up big for the Bobcats in a rivalry game against Logan. He led the team with 28 points in a 1-point win.Shad Watson, Box Elder
Watson scored 33 points and made five 3-point shots in a 52-51 win over Bonneville that kept the Bees alive for a playoff spot.Justin Pollmann, Tooele
Pollmann scored 35 points in a 73-58 loss to Bear River. The Bears Wade Miller also had a big night with 29.Jake Bailey, North Sanpete
Bailey was a beast inside for the Hawks. He had 26 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocks in a 66-55 win over Juab.
Wrestling fans will be treated to the state tournament this week at UVU involving all classifications starting Wednesday with the 4A and 5A state tournament.
Back to hoops where KSL Coaches Poll No. 1 Morgan enters the state tournament as the favorite in 3A. The Trojans have won 14 games in a row and feature 3A's leading scorer Jake Miles. Judge enters the tournament ranked No. 2 in the state. They will host Dixie in the first round Friday night. No. 3 Spanish Fork wrapped up a 10-0 region record and will open the tournament Friday at home against Ogden. Snow Canyon is ranked No. 4 and can win the Region 9 title outright with a win Tuesday night against Dixie. If they drop that game No. 5 Desert Hills or Cedar can move into a three-way tie with Snow Canyon for first place.
Wasatch Academy is the favorite in the 2A state tournament. They open tournament play at home Saturday against San Juan. Defending champion and 2nd ranked South Sevier should be Wasatch Academy's toughest challenger. Led by the leading scorer in the state Race Parsons, the Rams open the tournament at home against Merit Academy. No. 3 Emery has a tough opener in the tournament against Manti and No. 4 Gunnison and No. 5 Richfield will meet in the first round Saturday.
Lone Peak had another impressive week to remain No. 1 in 5A. Brighton moves up to No. 2 after defeating a ranked Jordan team and Cottonwood. Weber moves up to No. 3 after knocking off Davis. The Warriors now have a one game lead in Region 1 with two to play. Alta had a great week with wins over Copper Hills and Jordan to move into the top five at No. 4. Davis drops from No. 2 to No. 5 after losses to Weber and Layton.
Orem has reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in 4A and also taken over sole possession of first place in Region 8 after holding off previous No. 1 Timpview on Friday. The Bountiful Braves are the hottest team in 4A with 16 straight victories. They have a perfect 8-0 record in Region 6 and move up to No. 2 in this week's poll. Timpview falls to No. 3 this week followed by Roy at No. 4. Brekkott Chapman and the Royals are ranked for the first time this season after a big home win over Mountain Crest. Both teams are tied a top Region 5 with 6-1 records. Olympus remains No. 5 after avoiding an upset at Herriman. The Mustangs made a half-court buzzer beater for force overtime before the Titans prevailed.
The 1A rankings shuffle once again this week with Panguitch No. 1 followed by Layton Christian, Rich, Bryce Valley and Monticello. Panguitch defeated Bryce Valley 71-60 last Tuesday.
