WEST JORDAN — An accident between a car and a semitrailer Monday triggered a natural gas leak and temporarily closed the intersection at 9000 South and 1300 West, as well as nearby businesses.
The accident occurred about 7:30 p.m. when a westbound car turned left through the intersection into the path of an eastbound semi carrying building materials, West Jordan Police Lt. Drew Sanders said.
The semi driver swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid hitting the car full on, but still collided with the car, slid off the road and crashed into a car wash, causing significant damage to the building. The truck jackknifed and hit a gas main, causing a natural gas leak that was contained just after 9 p.m.
Nearby businesses were evacuated while crews from Questar dug up the gas main to stop the leak, Sanders said. The intersection was re-opened about 9:30 p.m.
The drivers of the two vehicles suffered only minor injuries, Sanders said. The accident remains under investigation.
