SANDY — Real Salt Lake defender Tony Beltran and midfielder Kyle Beckerman were named by U.S. Men's National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann on Sunday morning to his 25-man roster for a camp in January.
While this is Beckerman’s fifth call-up to the annual January camp, it’s Beltran’s first and also his first ever call-up to the senior USMNT.
Beltran earned USMNT call-ups when he was called to the under-20 and the under-23 teams in 2007 and 2008, respectively.
Both Beltran and Beckerman will report to the camp Jan. 7 and are scheduled to remain there until it concludes Jan. 27, just before the USMNT will jet off to Houston for its first friendly of 2013 against Canada on Jan. 29.
Beltran finished the 2012 season with 2,857 minutes in 32 matches for RSL, all of which he started. Beckerman totaled 2,592 minutes in 30 matches for RSL, with 29 starts. Beckerman also tallied four goals for the Salt Lake club in 2012.
The Claret and Cobalt will begin its 2013 preparations this month when it heads to its Arizona complex Jan. 21 for a weeklong preseason training session.
RSL will then kick off its second preseason training session at the University of California-Irvine Feb. 1-8.
Following two preseason training sessions, the Salt Lake club will participate in the FC Tucson Desert Diamond Cup preseason tournament, beginning Feb. 13, for the second consecutive year. RSL will face MLS opponents the New York Red Bulls, the Seattle Sounders and the New England Revolution during the tournament.
RSL will kick off its 2013 MLS season March 3 on the road in Buck Shaw Stadium as it faces the San Jose Earthquakes. The Claret and Cobalt will play its first home match March 16 as it hosts the Colorado Rapids.
