Nadine Wimmer reportingSticker shock at the pumps is spreading.
At a dollar store, if I want a hat, picture frame or bottle of water, a buck ought to cover it, right?
Not anymore.
The sign says Everything a Dollar. So, Dawn Wright did a double take.
Dawn Wright/customer: "I purchased 21 hats. When I got to the register, the total said $22.05."
Right there on the receipt, a 5-percent add on.
Dawn Wright, Customer: "I said, well, I'm at everything a dollar, isn't everything a dollar. And she said, no, now everything is a dollar five."
Gas prices have forced some stores to contradict their names.
Erik Spencer/employee: "They're like, well, gas prices are really high, so that makes sense."
It's five extra cents. Instead of everything a dollar...
"It's a dollar five."
At another store, gas prices have had a different impact. First Cash Pawn is getting plenty of merchandise.
Davis West, First Cash Pawn: "Some people come in, they just need ten bucks for gas to get to work."
As he told us that, in came a small business owner looking to sell an air compressor. Oh, he still needs the tool, but he needs gas money worse.
Rex Whitmore: "That will give me 100 dollars, will run both trucks for at least two or three days."
Davis West, First Cash Pawn: "It's good business, but you know, it's kind of tough. You feel bad for the people who have to bring in their stuff for that reason."
Whether it's needing a buck or breaking a buck, gas prices are the driving factor.
Just another bellweather so go gas prices, so go prices for other things.
