I know that a lot of KSL listeners love an all-you-can-eat buffet and so do I. Well recently, a number of Sound Bites listeners have contacted to tell me about a new all-you-can-eat buffet in Salt Lake. It’s called the Grand Buffet Restaurant and it’s located on 500 South in Trolley Square when Tony Roma’s used to be, right next to Restoration Hardware.
Well you wouldn’t know if from the name, but Grand Buffet Restaurant is a Chinese all-you-can-eat buffet, although there are a few non-Chinese items available, like macaroni and cheese and meatballs. But mostly, the Grand Buffet specializes in Chinese food and that means everything from the fried rice and potstickers that kids love to steamed shrimp and crawfish, spicy pepper chicken, hot & sour soup, fried tofu and dozens of other choices. At the Grand Buffet, there’s literally something for everyone.
Not that I loved everything at the Grand Buffet. For instance, vegetable tempura at a buffet just isn’t a good idea, since tempura needs to be eaten almost the second it comes out of the hot oil. But that’s OK, because the Grand Buffet gives customers a chance to try a lot of different foods with no risk. If you don’t like what’s on your plate, just go back and try something else.
Maybe the best thing about the Grand Buffet is their Mongolian barbecue station. Here’s how it works: You choose from about a dozen different ingredients and fill up a plate: there’s chicken, pork, beef, eggs, broccoli, sprouts, onions, mushrooms, and a lot more. Then you give your plate of raw food to the chef, choose the type of sauce you want, and he cooks up your custom-made dish in a matter of seconds in a huge, red hot wok. Kids especially like being able to create their own dishes at the Grand Buffet and when the kids are happy, everybody’s happy.
