You know, dining in Park City can be a bit daunting unless maybe your name is Trump or Rockefeller since prices can be a little out of whack up in that resort town. However, I recently discovered a great little restaurant at the base of Park City Mountain Resort called the Wabo House. Now, I haven’t quite pinned down what a Wabo is yet. But maybe it means something like “tasty,” because everything I’ve tried at the Wabo House in Park City has been very tasty.
The Wabo House specializes in Malaysian and Indonesian dishes, along with some Chinese staples thrown in, all prepared by Chef Wai Kuin Lee, who was trained in Malaysia. Well, Chef Lee brings Malaysian and Indonesian flavors to Utah with scrumptious dishes like nasai lemak, which is curried chicken and shrimp with a tangy sambal sauce along with eggs, peanuts, and fragrant coconut fried rice. In fact, the coconut fried rice alone is worth a trip to the Wabo House. And so is another Wabo House specialty called mee goring: a big plate of thin-sliced beef, chicken, and shrimp in a sweet but spicy soy sauce served with tofu, bean sprouts, scallions, coriander and soft chow mein noodles.
By the way, the Wabo House serves up lots of noodle and rice dishes that kids tend to enjoy, along with a big selection of unique Asian fruit cooler drinks like the pineapple and coconut delight or Mandarin, strawberry, and guava “snow” drinks. There’s also an interesting array of distinctive Asian desserts at the Wabo House and I’d certainly recommend an order of mango pudding, honey-fried wontons, or perhaps their chocolate-dipped fortune cookies.
To add to the appeal, the staff of the Wabo House is exceptionally friendly and, as I said in the beginning, the prices are easy on your dining budget. So the next time you visit Park City Mountain Resort, be sure to waddle over to the Wabo House for a terrific lunch or dinner.
