This year Deer Valley’s Goldener Hirsch Restaurant was voted the best restaurant in Park City and Deer Valley in Salt Lake Magazine. That’s quite an accomplishment given the lopsided number of really good restaurants up there. There are more excellent restaurants in Park City per square inch than just about anywhere else on the planet except maybe Paris.

Well, I hadn’t been to the Goldener Hirsch in a while so last week I took the gorgeous drive up to Silver Lake Village in Deer Valley to find out what award-winning Goldener Hirsch chef Jean-Louis Montecot has been up to. In case you’re unfamiliar, Jean-Louis is a native of Normandy, France, a member of the Cordon Bleu Society of Chefs and has been recognized by the James Beard Foundation as one of the “Top Hotel Chefs” in America. He’s also a great teacher and a very entertaining guy to chat with – if you can understand his French accent.

Of course you can always find popular classics at the Goldener Hirsch like weinerschnitzel, cheese fondue, and apple strudel. But with a talented French chef like Jean-Louis in the kitchen you’ll also find roasted rack of lamb with gratin dauphinois, seared Utah trout with toasted almond butter sauce, and seafood pappardelle with mussels, shrimp, scallops, and asparagus tips.

The service is second-to-none at the Goldener Hirsch and a really fun way to experience the restaurant is to grab a sunny seat on the deck on a Friday evening and take part in the Iron Chef Challenge, where customers select food ingredients and sauces that they like and Chef Montecot prepares a custom-made dish especially for you. It’s a “Goldener” opportunity to enjoy the Goldener Hirsch and Jean-Louis Montecot’s wonderful cuisine.
