Governor Huntsman's proposed budget priorities for the next fiscal year are right on target.
Education, as it should be, is at the top of the list. KSL especially supports his ideas for addressing the growing teacher shortage in the state. Making teacher salaries more competitive along with expanding teacher education programs will help sustain a quality teaching force in Utah.
Healthcare reform is critical. An innovative effort underway in Utah to formulate a model health care system and rein in spiraling costs warrants the funding the Governor is recommending in order to move the endeavor forward.
As well, KSL likes what the Governor is proposing for transportation, corrections, and key quality of life issues, along with his recognition that there is no clamoring demand this year for a tax cut.
KSL encourages lawmakers, who have the ultimate responsibility for setting the state's budget, not to stray very far from what Governor Huntsman is proposing.
