(Deseret Morning News) -- While demand in the teaching profession might be high, the pay in Utah isn't.

The state's public colleges fall behind other states when it comes to paying faculty members, making it harder to recruit and retain professors.

The American Association of University Professors found Salt Lake Community College pays professors an average of 50,000 dollars a year.

The national salary average for professors at two year schools make 16,000 dollars more.

Utah State professors make about 77,000, and University of Utah professors pull in an average annual salary of almost 98,000.

The national average for schools offering doctoral degrees is more than a hundred thousand.

Utah State officials say they've lost some top faculty members to schools that offer higher pay, and they plan to change that.
