ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP) -- Geoff Payne scored a season-high 32 points and added 11 rebounds as Southern Utah beat Oakland 82-73 in a Summit League game Saturday night.

The Thunderbirds (2-7, 1-1 Summit League) came to Oakland with a six-game losing streak, but won the game by dominating the post. Southern Utah outscored the bigger Golden Grizzlies 42-20 in the paint.

Nurudeen Adepoju added 18 points for the Thunderbirds, while David Baker had 15.

Erik Kangas paced the Golden Grizzlies (4-5, 1-1) with 27 points and Derick Nelson had 17, but Oakland's bench only scored five points.

Oakland led 55-54 midway through the second half before Payne took over the game, scoring 10 points in four minutes to help the Thunderbirds build an 11-point edge.

Payne added a key offensive rebound after Oakland had cut the margin to 70-63 with three minutes to play, allowing Southern Utah to run time off the clock.
