Sam Penrod reportingThere's a major fire burning in American Fork tonight. It's burning in an area that was a historic flour mill being developed as a specialty shopping area.
Fire crews are still on scene trying to make sure the fire is out. It's in a century-old flour mill that has been converted into an antique shop known as the Star Mill.
The flames became visible at about 7:30 tonight, and firefighters were called. Our Eyewitness News photographer was there as both the American Fork and Lone Peak fire departments arrived on the scene.
Our video gives you a sense of just how intense the flames were. Despite that, the firefighters were able to save most of the mill from any damage. However, some warehouse buildings where a lot of antiques were stored were completely destroyed.
While everyone is relieved that no one was hurt in this fire, there is still a sense of sadness, especially from longtime residents, because this mill has been a fixture in the community for so long and the mill is considered a part of history in American Fork.
The fire department isn't saying right now how this fire started. We have noticed several police detectives looking around, but right now no one is calling this suspicious.
100 East, the Alpine Highway that runs through American Fork, is closed and will be for a few more hours because of the fire hoses on the road.
There's no dollar figure yet on the damage, but with all of those antiques, it is certainly a big loss.
