WEST VALLEY CITY — A shooting in West Valley City left one man in serious condition Friday night.

According to Lt. Dalan Taylor with West Valley City Police Department, police responded to a possible shooting at 4020 W 4100 South around 10 pm.

A group was gathered in the parking lot of an apartment complex there when some kind of unspecified altercation took place, according to Taylor. One 18-year-old man was shot in the chest and another man was assaulted in the incident.

Police found the victim at a nearby Arctic Circle where he had stumbled after being shot. People there rendered aid and called authorities.

The victim was transported to a local hospital in serious condition, though he was conscious and talking when police arrived.

Police still aren't sure who the shooter is and why the altercation took place.

"We're still trying to piece together exactly what happened, who was involved and what took place," Taylor said.

Several people were detained for questioning and several witnesses were being interviewed early Saturday morning.

Police set up a large containment area to search for possible suspects, and several agencies sent our dogs to aid in the search, Taylor said.

As of Saturday, afternoon, the victim was again awake and talking, but his name has not yet been released.

The suspect is still at large.
