LAYTON — More than two hours after a construction crew hit a four-inch natural gas line in Layton, the line was clamped down and the leak was stopped.
It happened at 2195 N. University Park Blvd. around 8:30 a.m.
Questar crews shut off the gas at the source and pinched the pipe to prevent it from leaking. Gas remaining in the line also dissipated naturally.
Repairing the line could take most of the day.
The gas is flammable, but officials said beyond that it should not pose a health threat.
Four homes and four businesses directly East of the leak were evacuated.
Davis Hospital was not included in the evacuation. People at the hospital reported smells of natural gas, but crews cleared the facility.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area of the gas line break.
In a separate incident, Washington Elementary School in Salt Lake City was briefly evacuated due to reports of a gas leak this morning.
The leak was reported in the kitchen.
The school, located at 420 N. 200 West, has been cleared and students have been allowed to return to class.
