SALT LAKE CITY — KSL Newsradio will broadcast the first of a series of gubernatorial debates in September between Gov. Gary Herbert and Democratic challenger Peter Cooke.
The hour-long debate, hosted by the Utah League of Cities and Towns, will follow a question-and-answer format moderated by KSL Newsradio's Doug Wright.
Herbert will participate with Cooke in two other debates, one on Oct. 4 and one on Oct. 11. The Oct. 4 debate will revolve around questions submitted by business leaders.
"An informed electorate is essential to the democratic process," Herbert said in prepared remarks. "Utah's economy is one of the strongest in the nation and we are investing in the areas that will strengthen our quality of life. I look forward to a robust and civilized discussion of the issues that matter most to Utahns."
Debate schedule
Cooke had previously challenged Herbert to a series of seven debates, an idea the governor did not reject.
Herbert is seeking re-election to a full four-year term after assuming the governorship in Aug. 2009 when Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. resigned. Huntsman had been offered the position of United States Ambassador to the People's Republic of China by Pres. Barack Obama. Herbert was elected during a special election in 2010 to serve out the remainder of the term.
Lt. Gov. Greg Bell will debate his challenger, Vince Rampton, Oct. 31 at Utah State University.
