OGDEN — A Montana woman now faces a list of possible charges, including arson, after a chase and a car fire in Ogden.

Police Lt. Chad Ledford said officers on Friday night noticed what they suspected was a drug deal between Sheri Kelm, 35, and another person near 14th Street and Washington Boulevard. When the attempted to stop her car, police said Kelm fled, leading them on a short high-speed chase that officers called off when her car moved into the path of oncoming traffic.

Not long after, police found the car on fire on Century Drive.

"Her fiancée, when giving her the car, basically said, ‘If you need to get rid of it, burn it,'" said Ledford. "She had a bottle of starter fluid in her car and, based on what her fiancée told her to do, that's what she did."

Police found Kelm hiding in some bushes nearby, covered in twigs and leaves and with cuts on her bare feet. Ledford said police are now trying to locate her fiancée. Ledford said the car was reported stolen out of Montana.

"She probably would have had better success if she hadn't set fire to the car," he said.

Kelm was booked into jail.

"She's got a plethora of problems to deal with," said Ledford. "It would have been much easier for her, obviously, to stop and talk to the police officers and let them do what they were going to do. But she chose to take it up a notch."
