SPANISH FORK — The pilot of a helicopter was hospitalized with serious injuries after the aircraft crashed Friday.
The two-passenger Robinson training helicopter was flying east of the Spanish Fork-Springville Airport, west of Springville, at about 4:45 p.m. when it went down.
Spanish Fork police Lt. Brandon Anderson said Gary Hansen, owner of Utah Helicopter, and a flight student were on-board at the time of the crash, but it is unclear who was in operating the aircraft.
"They were doing simulated engine failures and at some point during the simulated engine failures, the helicopter lost altitude and that's when it came in contact to the ground," he said.
Federal Aviation Administration officials were investigating the crash.
Hansen was transported to the hospital and the student was treated at the scene and released.
