(KSL News) Four areas inside Uintah Elementary School in Salt Lake City have been disinfected, following a single case of MRSA infection.
The drug-resistant staph bacteria showed up as a small sore on the finger of one child. As a precaution, the school staff took aggressive action and disinfected the child's classroom, the cafeteria, a computer lab and a play area.
The school also sent a letter home to parents emphasizing that children should wash their hands, especially while in school.
Shauna Olson, with the support team at Uintah Elementary, said, "The child's infection has completely cleared, and we feel confident that no others have contracted that MRSA infection."
Community-based, drug-resistant staph infections are common now, with cases in Utah diagnosed every year. The MRSA strain can be serious, but the spread of infection can be prevented with good hygiene practices.
