SANDY — With CONCACAF competition quickly approaching for Real Salt Lake, the club announced Wednesday it acquired Salt Lake City-native Justin Braun from the Montreal Impact in exchange for a conditional 2014 SuperDraft pick.
Braun joins the Claret and Cobalt in his fifth year in MLS as he played his first four years with MLS Western Conference opponent Chivas USA and then was acquired by the Impact in November 2011.
Braun had 12 appearances for the Impact in 20 games and tallied a single assist.
Braun, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound forward, will help provide additional depth at the striker position for RSL during the remainder of the MLS regular season (14 games) and during the club's CONCACAF matches that will take place beginning July 31.
In his early years, Braun prepped in the Beehive State at Skyline High School and earned first-team all-state honors and led the state in scoring during his junior and senior years.
Braun was noticed and picked up by Chivas USA while playing for the Utah Select Team at the Home Depot Center in January 2008.
RSL will take to the road this weekend as it travels to face San Jose for the third time this season.
The Salt Lake side will look to take back the top slot in the Western Conference that the Earthquakes grabbed from RSL on June 23 as they took a 2-1 win over the Claret and Cobalt.
RSL will play two more home matches in the month of July before jetting off to begin CONCACAF competition in Costa Rica July 31 against Herediano.
