HOLLADAY — The Holladay Planning Commission is holding a public hearing on Tuesday, June 26 at 7 p.m. to discuss preliminary concept plans for a new fire station.

The current station, at 4625 S. Holladay Blvd. was built approximately 60 years ago. A 2009 report found a cracking bearing wall is getting worse since it was discovered in 2003. It also stated the existing station is at risk of catastrophic collapse in the event of an earthquake. A recent report also stated that it was discovered to have been built on a landfill due to evidence of soil borings.

The new fire station will be located on 2210 E. Murray- Holladay Road on the property located across the street from Olympus Junior High School. The city has pursued funding options for a new fire station over the past several years, with little success in this economic environment. However, it recently was able to refinance the existing city hall bond at a lower interest rate to fund the new fire station without an additional tax burden to residents.

The property was donated to the city by Salt Lake County with a requirement that the property could only be used for a public use, according to a recent report from the city of Holladay.

The meeting will be held Tuesday, June 26 at 4580 S. 2300.

SLCC ranked 3rd in U.S. for associate degrees

Community College Week has named Salt Lake Community College as the number three prolific producer of associate degrees in the country. The results were originally published on June 11.

"Salt Lake Community College's national No. 3 ranking is a testament to the hard work and persistence of our students, their faculty and remarkable support staff," SLCC President Cynthia Bioteau said.

Salt Lake Community College was succeeded only by Northern Virginia Community College as No. 1, and Houston Community College as No. 2. SLCC was the only Utah community college on the list, with Utah Valley University (76) and Weber State (85) the only two four-year institutions in Utah.

The Top 100 list compiled by Community College Week considers all types of associate degrees with data collected during the 2010-11 academic year. The data came from the National Center for Education Statistics through the Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data Set (IPEDS) completions survey. The list includes institutions from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The results of the 2012 Top 100 list can be found online at: www.ccweek.com/.
