SALT LAKE CITY — Utah students now have another option: The Open High School of Utah is partnering with Weber State University to give dual credit to online students.
The Online Early Access program begins this fall, and will provide junior- and senior-age students living in any corner of the state the opportunity to take college classes while still in high school.
"The greatest thing about this partnership is it gives students across Utah access," said DeLaina Tonk's, Open High School's director.
The Open High School is a free, public charter school entering its fourth year. Students get a laptop, one-on-one attention from teachers, and flexibility in their timing.
Tonks said students participating in the new program can enroll in about 100 college classes from Weber State. These college courses, she said, were picked to help students be competitive in today's world.
"They need to fit the graduation requirements for our students, so they won't be taking underwater basket weaving, or just for fun type classes," Tonks said. "The point of it is to engage them in college-level rigor, expand their horizons, and help them be competitive when they get to the college campus and beyond."
To apply for Online Early Access, students must be enrolled at the Open High School and submit their high school transcripts and ACT scores to WSU. A fee of $30 must also be paid to Weber State, as well as a $50 fee to Open High School — fees similar to those required for concurrent enrollment classes in brick-and-mortar schools, Tonks said.
