SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the site of its planned Star Valley Wyoming Temple.

In a news release, the church said the new temple will be built east of U.S. Highway 89 on the Haderlie Farm property south of Afton.

The church quotes Afton Mayor Loni Hillyard as saying, "Our (Latter-day Saint) community members are elated at the prospects of a temple in our valley. I view the temple as an asset and am certain it will have a positive effect on our entire community. We look forward to working with the architect and church representatives as they move forward on this project."

The Star Valley Wyoming Temple will be the first in Wyoming and will serve members living in the western part of the state, who now travel to Idaho Falls and Rexburg, Idaho, to attend a temple.

Once construction begins, the new temple is expected to take approximately two years to complete.

"We truly believe this new temple will be a great asset not only to members of the Church but also to the people of the surrounding community, who will benefit from the peace and beauty a temple brings," said Jerry Hansen, local spokesman for the church.

The Star Valley Temple was announced during October 2011 general conference. The church currently has 166 temples in operation, announced or under construction around the world.
