MURRAY — Jennifer Sorensen doesn't remember what she was dreaming about last night.

But she remembers what woke her up.

"I heard two, and it was BOOM! It was just loud," said Sorensen.

Sometime around 4 a.m. Saturday, 21-year old Mike Alvert was shot in her neighborhood.

He collapsed, and died, right outside her house.

"I thought it was TRAX or something on the freeway," Sorensen said. "I looked out the window and there is this gentleman, just flat. You could tell he was gone. It was just so sad."

Murray police detective Jeff Maglish said Alvert had been attending a party in the area. Sorensen called police who found Alvert just around the corner from where the party was taking place.

"We're still investigating at this point," said Murray Police Department Detective Jeff Maglish. "The victim was found around the corner of the house where he had been attending a party."

Apparently, the party had invited rival gang members. They ended up attending this party, which we believe was gang related.

Lots of people were at that all-night party at a house on 6645 S. 630 West.

"Apparently, the party had invited rival gang members. They ended up attending this party, which we believe was gang related," Maglish said.

Investigators also think the people doing the inviting might not have realized the rival gang connection.

"With technology these days, a lot of these parties (invitations) are through text messages and stuff like that," Maglish said. "So people might not have even realized they were inviting somebody who was from a rival gang."

Whatever the reason, something went wrong.

After Alvert was shot, he stumbled for about a block before collapsing.

People at the party started running out of the house.

"I heard two shots but apparently, there were three," said Sorensen. "It's a beautiful neighborhood. Everybody knows everybody. We never had a problem before."

Police say there have been complaints about this house in the past for loud parties, but never anything like this.

Neighbors say the house is being rented and the actual owner lives overseas.

As of late Saturday afternoon, investigators are still looking for the person who shot and killed Alvert.
