LAYTON — An 8-year-old Layton boy dressed as his favorite superhero, Batman, played the part when fire broke out in his neighborhood.

The Standard-Examiner reports Luke Purcell was at a neighbor's home playing Batman outside with one of his friends on April 27. Purcell smelled what he thought was fireworks and saw smoke rising above the roof of another home in the neighborhood.

The caped crusader alerted his friend's mother, who called emergency crews. Her call was one of several received about the fire near 200 West and Meadow Brooke Court. Firefighters arrived and doused the flames. No one was injured.

Doug Bitton of the Layton Fire Department told the Examiner it's extremely rare for a boy of that age to recognize a fire at a house other than their own early on and do the right thing.

Purcell told the Examiner although he was dressed as Batman and worried there might be people inside the burning house, he didn't want to rescue them himself because he didn't want to catch on fire.
