SALT LAKE CITY — The next time you go somewhere outside with small children, a college students suggests you consider leaving the stroller in the car.

Young children can walk longer than you think, says University of Utah medical student Lindsay Janicki. She is mapping out routes and paths around the Wasatch Front that kids can walk. She says there is a time and place for a stroller, but this is about those other times.

"The purpose is to leave it behind more and more, and encourage them to enjoy those recreational activities that are in a smaller park or a safe area," she said.

Through her website and Facebook page for Track-it SLC, Janicki has mapped places like the Hogle Zoo, Sugarhouse Park, Tracy Aviary and Thanksgiving Point, and wants to form partnerships with new places.

She was inspired after a study found 80 percent of toddlers ages 1-2 were kept in strollers more than half the time they spent outdoors. Janicki says an average 2- to 3-year-old can walk up to a half-mile.
