WEST VALLEY CITY — Two West Valley parents were charged Monday with child abuse after their 1-month-old son was hospitalized.

Marina Meza, 18, and Sebastian Andres Alberez, 19, were each charged with child abuse, a class A misdemeanor, in the 3rd District Court.

In November, West Valley police responded to Primary Children's Medical Center to discover that the infant had a torn lower frenulum and subconjunctival hemorrhage in his left eye, the charges state.

Meza and Alberez told police they were the child's primary caregivers and not baby-sitters and had watched the baby since he was born. Prosecutors say neither could provide a reasonable explanation for the injuries.
