SANDY — A neighborhood in Sandy is trying to recover from a rash of vandalism over the weekend involving tire slashing.

According to police, approximately 40 tires were slashed sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning near 11200 South and 1900 East, and some cars had multiple tires slashed. They estimate more than $7,000 of damages in the neighborhood. Police so far have no leads for suspect or motive.

"They just grabbed a knife and went to the side, a good inch or so, absolutely no repair," said one victim, Toren Beals.

As Beals got up early to leave for work on Saturday morning, he didn't get very far. He got in his car and started driving when he felt strange bumps. When he got out and looked at his tires, he noticed one had been slashed. At the home he lives at with his family of seven drivers, four cars had tires slashed.

"We have to go places and it was chaos that day, trying to get rides places," Beals said. "We had places to go and one car running just because it was in the garage. "

Just down the street, Jared Richardson, who came into town from Arizona late Friday night to visit relatives, woke up to a similar situation. His car, which he had parked in the driveway, had its right rear tire slashed.

"We're planning to drive back to Phoenix pretty soon, and can't drive that far on a donut, so we had to run down to the tire store and get it fixed," Richardson said.

But for families like the Beals, who have to fix four tires, they hope the vandals feel some remorse, and some neighbors are talking about starting a neighborhood watch program. Police are urging anyone with information on this case, or who see anything suspicious, to report it.
