OGDEN — The search for a 3-year-old Layton boy who fell into the Weber River on Saturday while posing for a family picture will resume Monday.
Search crews called off their daylong search on Sunday about 7:30 p.m. and will resume at dawn Monday.
On Saturday afternoon, police say a family was having its picture taken on a large rock on the bank of the river near 300 W. 24th St. The boy, identified by family members as Corbin Anderson, fell into the river about 5:30 p.m.
The boy's father jumped into river to try to rescue his son but was unable to reach him, said Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Mark Lowther. An Ogden police officer who arrived at the scene shortly after dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call about the incident also went into the water but was unable to locate the boy.
"We have witnesses who saw him go into the water, and we have no indication that he made it out of the water," Lowther said. "With his age, the current and the temperature of the water, we have to presume he's deceased."
Weber County swift-water rescuers and divers were searching for the boy's body Sunday morning. Gates at Echo Reservoir were lowered to reduce the amount of flow into the river and assist the search, he said.
"We've been able to get the water level of the river lowered, and it continues to drop," Lowther said. "The problem is, it takes up to 18 to 20 hours for us to see that effect down here because we're so far downstream."
Crews searched the river between 24th Street, where the boy fell in, and 17th Street, on Sunday, police said.
