SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Free parking will be back in downtown Salt Lake City for the holiday shopping season.

The Salt Lake City Council voted last week to keep the two-hour free parking practice in place from Thanksgiving to New Year's.

The downtown parking meters have been covered every holiday season since 2003. The city is trying to keep shoppers coming downtown and using the free parking as an incentive.

The council estimates the free parking costs the city about $150,000. That's $100,000 that would be plugged into the meters and another $50,000 for missed parking fines.
