SANDY — A 14-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday after being struck by a truck.
Dylan Gibbs was attempting to cross 10600 South near 390 East with his two brothers when he was hit just after 4:30 p.m., Sandy Police Lt. Jeff DuVal said. The three boys were walking home from church at the time.
"(They) ran across the street and made it to the median," DuVal said. "Once they were on the median, the oldest brother yelled to his younger brothers to stop and apparently the 14-year-old didn't hear that and an eastbound truck ... struck him."
The boy was not using a marked crosswalk.
The driver of the truck stopped immediately. Police said motorists in the inside lane had seen the boys and begun to slow down, but that the driver of the truck was in the outside lane and didn't see the teenager.
"Witnesses that were driving behind him said that speed was not a factor," DuVal said. "The initial indication is that drugs and alcohol were not a factor and it is most likely that the driver will not be receiving a citation."
The boy sustained head injuries and was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.
The crash remains under investigation.
