SYRACUSE — The Syracuse Police Department saved money and became more environmentally friendly when it replaced 10 cars with hybrid vehicles earlier this year.

The new 2012 Ford Fusion and Ford Escape hybrid cars are helping the department save around $3,000 per month in gas. Along with being fuel efficient, the new squad cars are also faster and more reliable than the older gas models.

It's saving money, it's going green. It's doing a lot of things that are positive.

"These are more than adequate," said Chief Brian Wallace. "They're plenty quick and we're able to catch everybody that we've gone after."

The police department made an additional $21,000 from the old cars by selling them itself instead of using a dealership.

"It's saving money, it's going green," said Wallace of the change. "It's doing a lot of things that are positive."
