PROVO, Utah (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture will give Utah Valley State College more than $900,000 to establish distance learning programs for the Navajo Nation.
Some of the money will fund high-definition video conferencing technology to community centers equipped with computers.
The program expands and existing partnership between UVSC, the state of Utah and the private education group Certiport, which teaches computer and career skills, wellness education and high school diploma completion programs.
Census figures show only 72.5 percent of American Indians aged 25 and older had a high school diploma in 2000. The average among other Americans is 80.4 percent.
Classes will be held in learning centers at 110 chapter houses and community centers on the Navajo Nation, with spans parts of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico.
