PROVO — Provo's planning commission will address plans to permanently close a portion of 100 South at University Avenue to accommodate an LDS temple being built downtown.

When The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the Provo Tabernacle would be rebuilt into a temple, Mayor John Curtis told KSL the city would start studying the possibility of closing a portion of 100 South next to the tabernacle.

"Preliminary discussions have been had. There's actually a traffic study underway to see the impact of that closure," he said.

The Daily Herald reports traffic would be rerouted down Freedom Boulevard and 300 South.

The LDS Church has already purchased the land across the street south of the tabernacle as it plans out the temple grounds. The City Council will tackle the issue of vacating 100 South during Wednesday's planning session.

Provo's development director calls the development around the temple site a positive addition to downtown.
