(KSL News) A cell phone and a helicopter helped two hikers get back to safety.

The hikers started hiking on Deseret Peak, in Tooele County, yesterday morning. They came to a controlled-burn area and couldn't find the trail. They continued to walk, but realized they were lost when they ended up in a canyon.

"There was snow up there. I'm not sure if that's where we lost the trail, or we came into a controlled burn and everything was burned flat. I think the trail might have been there somewhere, but we never found it again and ended up in the wrong canyon," explained hiker Bruce Laden.

The two set up camp for the night. They were able to find an open space and call 911 on a cell phone this morning.

Rescue crews sent a helicopter out to the area. The couple continued to call and give the helicopter pilot directions to where they were.
