This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
With both a father and grandfather who were entrepreneurs, you could say the trait is in Kevin Jones' blood. That's probably why he's building a successful company, Snap Daddy's Bar-B-Que Sauce in Salt Lake City, from the ground up.
One day 13-year-old daughter asked him for the recipe for his barbecue sauce, so she'd have it in case anything happened to him. This became a side business where he sold it out of his desk at work. It wasn't until he sold out halfway through two farmer's markets that he realized he had a viable product, and Snap Daddy's was born.
This is a sweet barbecue sauce. The flavor is richer, deeper and more satisfying because of the ingredients it's made with. The Original is a traditional Texas style sauce naturally flavored with molasses to give it a rich smoky flavor. Sweet Kisses is made with fruits instead of sugars and high fructose corn syrup. They use five kinds of peppers in the Slappin' Hot so the initial taste is the food, yet the heat builds the more you eat.
Last May Snap Daddy's wanted to find more options for producing their product, so they met with Nicholas and Company, one of the largest food distributors in the West. The meeting went better than they could have anticipated; they were so impressed, they brought Kevin on board as a vendor. At their summer food show in June 2011, Snap Daddy's won the Best Presentation Award, the first rookie company to win it in a decade.
Snap Daddy's Bar-B-Que Sauce is now found in 63 grocery stores statewide. All it takes is one taste, and most people are hooked. Not bad for a company that officially launched in June 2011.
Snap Daddy's is a member of Utah's Own, which supports local products, and because of his membership, found the kitchen where they produce Snap Daddy's Bar-B-Que Sauce. With the capacity to make up to 1,200 gallons of sauce per day, growth is coming swiftly to this Salt Lake City company.
