Poston Leads Ute Running Game in Scrimmage

SALT LAKE CITY -- University of Utah senior running back Darryl Poston stood out Saturday morning in the Utes' first spring scrimmage. Poston rushed for 79 yards and four touchdowns.

Poston carried the ball 14 times, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. He scored on runs of 17, 8, 12 and 13 yards. Poston also tacked on two receptions for 52 yards in the morning workout.

Jarrell Woods scored on a 7-yard run, running with the second-team offense. Brady Phillips accounted for the offense's other TD, a 4-yard plunge into the end zone. All six touchdowns in the scrimmage came on rushing plays.

Brett Ratliff and Tommy Grady shared most of the load at quarterback. Ratliff was 6-of-16 passing for 102 yards. Grady finished the day 7-of-20 for 115 yards. Converted running back Sean Smith was the top receiver, grabbing four aerials for 62 yards.

Sophomore kicker Louie Sakoda had a strong outing, hitting 9-of-10 field-goal attempts. Defensive lineman Kelly Talavou broke up two passes at the line of scrimmage, while Martail Burnett, J.J. Williams and Bryce Scanlon each registered sacks.

Utah will scrimmage again next Saturday (April 15) at the outdoor practice facility. The Utes Spring Game is slated for April 22 at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
