SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police were trying to figure out Monday why a woman left a 4-year-old child with a couple she had just met and then disappeared.

Just before 1:30 a.m. Monday, a couple saw a woman holding a crying child and knocking on several doors at their apartment complex, near 1600 West and 1675 South, said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Mike Hamideh. Police estimated the boy was 4 years old.

The woman, who was not dressed for the cold weather, told the couple she had been in a fight with her boyfriend and was dropped off in front of the complex. She claimed she had a friend who lived in one of the apartments but couldn't remember which one, Hamideh said.

After the couple invited the woman and child inside their apartment to get warm, the woman asked if they would watch her son while she tried to find her friend. Two hours after the woman left, however, and with no word from her, the couple called police.

The Division of Child and Family Services took the young boy to the Christmas Box House.

Police found the woman several hours later. As of Monday afternoon, the child remained in state protective custody while the woman was being questioned.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
