OGDEN -- A new program in the Ogden City School District gives high school students a longer lunch period if they cut down on tardies and keep good grades.
Ogden High School Principal Stacey Briggs says the reward of 30 more minutes to socialize has been key.
"Socialization is always a great reward for teenagers because they love to hang out and spend time together," she explained.
"The teachers love it too," Briggs continued, "because once that bell rings, they close the doors and are ready to start teaching."

Briggs says the number of tardies at the school has been cut in half since the program began.
Ben Lomond High School Principal Ben Smith says tardies are down at that school, as well. Last year Ben Lomond students had 115 tardies in the first term per day. This year the number dropped to 78. Smith also says Ben Lomond students are more aware of their grades.
Those who do not get a card for longer lunch each week spend the time in tutoring or study hall. Both schools started the lunch reward program in the fall.
"It's definitely changing the culture and the climate within the walls of our school," Smith said.
