FM 100's Jill Atwood ReportingThe clock is ticking for Utah seniors who still haven't decided which prescription drug plan to go with. It's confusing, it's time consuming, but it can be very cost effective with the right help.

Bombarded by insurance information and prompted by computer fears, seniors sign up for some much needed help at the Liberty Senior Center. Utah seniors have until May 15th to navigate the new Medicare part D, a confusing system consisting of about 45 different drug plans.

A program called My Medicare Matters wants to alleviate some of that pressure. They'll navigate the system for you.

"So now are you looking for another plan that would be more appropriate? Less money?" "yep, exactly, a little less money."

Caroline Martin just went with one insurance company, but quickly realized she should be going with another. Her educator found two other plans that cost less.

Caroline Martin: "I learned all kinds of things. I learned the options that I might have at home if decide to change, and I think I will change because clearly I'm paying a lot more than I need to."

The sessions are quick and simple and require just a few things:

  • Make sure you bring information on your current drug plan,
  • Have a list of your prescriptions, frequency and dosage.
  • Also round up all of your insurance cards.
  • Finally, bring a loved one or friend who can help you. The more people that know about you and your health, the better.

Understanding "what" your signing up for is the key. Educators are reminding seniors not to sign anything if they are not sure. Take the time to get those questions answered. There are over 30 of these education seminars left around the valley.
