Alex Cabrero reporting

There are fewer illegal drugs in Northern Utah today thanks to a couple of huge busts this week.

Drug task forces say they've put a big dent in the Salt Lake to Ogden to Logan marijuana ring.

This past Tuesday, the Weber-Morgan county drug task force made a big marijuana bust at a house in Ogden. Information from that case led them to another house in Logan.

When Logan police went to that house, they say they found what would become their largest marijuana bust in at least the past 20 years.

Sgt. Bret Randall, Logan Police Dept. : "I've never seen this much. It's not every day you get to catch our version of the mother load."

15 pounds of marijuana, all found, in this sleepy Logan neighborhood.

Bill Crowson, Logan Resident: "Yeah, it scares me."

Bill Crowson lives just two houses away from the small home where police made the big bust. If you think the man police arrested was surprised, you should've seen how shocked Bill was when he found out his four children were playing so close to Logan's hugest known stash of marijuana.

Bill Crowson, Logan Resident: "I'm glad to see it off the streets. These kids today got too much to worry about besides... Just getting good grades is hard enough. They don't need drugs tempting them too."

Police arrested 30-year-old Brian Smart for the marijuana. They say it was in several large garbage bags outside his home.

Investigators also think Smart was kind of a delivery and gardner man for a much larger marijuana operation, one that's been getting into Logan.

Sgt. Bret Randall, Logan Police Dept.: "We've seen a lot more marijuana, quality marijuana, in Logan the past 6 months than we have previously."

Now, police think they've been able to set that operation back a little, hopefully a lot.

Sgt. Bret Randall, Logan Police Dept. "A grower that big would produce a lot of marijuana, and would be able to supply a lot of different places."

Smart is expected to be in court this coming week to face drug charges.

We're also told because of the scope and size of these busts, the federal drug task force is involved as well.
