Did you ever think that dusty old lamp or vase you have lying around might be worth something?
If you want to find out, bring it to the McHenry Museum on April 8 for its second Trash or Treasure appraisal day.
Twenty appraisers qualified in 50 categories will be at the Modesto museum to offer information about the history and value of antiques and collectibles.
Items that can be appraised include art glass, books, toys, holiday items, clocks, writing equipment, furniture, dolls and figurines, kitchenware, paintings, pottery, radios, sterling-silver items, sports memorabilia, textiles, tools and more.
Organizers say American Indian artifacts also are welcome, as well as costumejewelry. However, no appraisals will be given on fine jewelry or Oriental arts.
The cost is $5 for each item appraised, or three items for $10. A set of items, such as silverware or a tea set, will be charged as a single appraisal.
But multiple pieces from different sets will each be charged as separate items.
The event is from 10 a.m. to3 p.m.; coins, stamps and buttons can be appraised only from 1 to 3 p.m.
The proceeds from the event will go to the McHenry Museum Acquisition fund, to be used to expand the museum's collection.
But co-organizer John Crabb says the day will serve as much to raise awareness for the museum as it will to earn money.
Dedicated in 1972, the McHenry Museum displays artistic and historical exhibits offering insight into the history of Modesto and Stanislaus County.
"We've got a legacy to leave for those coming behind us about what happened here in Stanislaus County and Modesto that has made our city and the Central Valley what it is today," said Crabb, who is a member of both the museum board of directors and the acquisition committee.
Last year's appraisal day was highly successful, attracting more than 400 people and raising around $4,500, organizers said. People showed up early and formed lines before the event began.
One of the objects appraised was an art-glass piece made for the U.S. centennial celebration in 1876. The piece's estimated value exceeded $10,000.
But don't expect an item to be worth a small fortune just because it is old, organizers caution. "We have to be 100 percent honest with people," said Crabb, who will be appraising ink wells, ink stands and desk items. "Something can be a family treasure ... but may have no real (monetary) value."
Only verbal appraisals nothing written will be given at the event.
