Marc Giauque reportingThe first rails for Utah's new commuter rail system are now on the ground. They arrived Wednesday afternoon, hauled in by train.
Fifty quarter-mile rails were rolled off specially-built cars. Using a winch and the train itself, crews unloaded the rails on at a time. Commuter rail construction manager Steve Meyer says it's a milestone.
"It's great for the contractor to see all the hard work they've been doing for drainage and utility work out here, getting some grade finished to put some rail on it - it's going to be great," Meyer says. He says that should happen within five or six weeks.
The entire 44 mile-long project is expected to be complete by the summer of 2008.
