WEST VALLEY CITY — A 16-year-old girl was hospitalized Friday afternoon after being stabbed in the stomach.
The girl and a 15-year-old friend were walking by an apartment complex near 3900 South and 1400 West around 3 p.m. when an altercation broke out between them and 10 to 15 "rivals," West Valley City Police Lt. Mike Coleman said. Both girls were injured, but Coleman said the 16-year-old was only the one who was stabbed.
A friend came and drove the pair away, placing a call to 911 shortly after. The 15-year-old was treated by paramedics for minor injuries.
"The 16-year-old was taken to a hospital for treatment due to her serious injuries," Coleman said. "She is stable and is expected to survive and recover fully."
Police said the incident is under investigation, but said there are "gang implications." Coleman said some witnesses who called 911 when the fight was ongoing reported that gang names were being shouted.
"We're still trying to figure out if it is gang-related," he said. "It's unclear right now whether our victims are going to be fully cooperative in identifying who was involved and the reasons for it."
