ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- Just in time for Christmas cheer, a new state liquor store is expected to open in December, only the second in this growing city.

At 10,000 square feet, the store will be more than twice the size of the other store in St. George.

"It's going to be an attractive store," said John Freeman, director of operations at the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

With just one store, residents shopping for a favorite bottle often find empty shelves. Some drive to Nevada and return with booze, a misdemeanor in Utah. St. George has a population of 126,000. "I wouldn't have to drive all the way across town," Linda Frederich, 60, said of the new store. "It would be more convenient for me."

Officials had hoped to open it earlier than December but construction crews encountered stubborn bedrock.
